While New Year’s Day is usually home to a couple of bangs and explosions, the rattle felt across central Newfoundland on Wednesday was not caused by a synthetic fire.
Earthquakes Canada says a small earthquake occurred at 2:11 pm NT, off the coast of the island in Notre Dame Bay, between Fortune Harbor and Moreton’s Harbour.
Although people throughout central Newfoundland reported feeling the earthquake, there appear to have been no major impacts.
An Earthquakes Canada spokesperson said “the magnitude was 2.8, large enough to be felt but too small to cause damage.”
According to the earthquake monitoring group, the epicenter of the earthquake occurred about 19 kilometers west of Twillingate, 33 kilometers northeast of Lewisporte or about 85 kilometers northwest of Gander.
