The special presidential envoy of the United States for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg said on Saturday that a peace plan for the two nations at war could come in a few days or weeks.
“I am in Trump’s time,” Kellogg told the delegates in a marginal event at the Munich Security Conference, referring to the famous decision -making of the president of the United States, Donald Trump.
“He will ask you to do this work today and want to know tomorrow why he is not resolved,” said Kellogg, a key negotiator for Ukraine and allied nations in recently presented peace conversations.
“You have to give us some space to breathe and time, but when I say that, I’m not speaking six months, I’m talking about days and weeks,” he said.
Kellogg said there was currently a “double way” approach for peace conversations, with US representatives that are presented with Russia, and separately with Ukraine and allied nations. Kellogg, on the other hand, said he was working on behalf of this last group and insisted, against the previous suggestions of the United States, that both Ukraine and Europe must be part of those conversations.
“You have to bring allies with you. Are they (Ukraine and Europe) are you going to play a role? Of course they are. You can’t do it with anyone’s exclusion, ”he said.
“We want to make sure it is lasting and that it is a sustainable peace,” he added.
Europe may not be on the table to talk about peace
Kellogg clarified that Europe may not be physically at the table for peace conversations, but that the interests of the region would take into account.
“What we don’t want to do is enter a big group discussion,” he said.
When asked if he could describe the requirements for a credible security guarantee for Ukraine, Kellogg said he couldn’t do it yet.
“The answer at this time is no,” he said, and pointed out that he was at the conference to gather concepts of Ukraine and Europe. Sometimes, the United States has a “problem just looking through its own lens,” he added.
Global defense and security officials meet in Munich, Germany, for the three -day annual conference, where the future of Ukraine, Peace Conversations with Russia and the remodeling of Europe’s Security and Defense Architecture are To the first of the discussions.
The prospects for a peace agreement returned to the forefront this week after President Trump made separate phone calls with Putin and, later, Zelenskyy. After initially indicating that a bilateral agreement could be reached between Washington and Moscow, Trump later said Zelenskyy of Ukraine would be involved, along with “many other people.”
Even so, concerns about Europe’s participation in negotiations have cloudy the event, and the senior EU officials insist that there could be no lasting peace without them.
Speaking in a panel together with Kellogg on Saturday, Croatia Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said it was essential to achieve not “any” peace agreement, but one that guarantees the territorial integrity of Ukraine. He added that the exclusion of Europe from conversations would be “politically unacceptable” given the long transatlantic ties between Europe and the United States.
Addressing the delegates of the Court, the Prime Minister of Iceland, Kristún Frostadóttir, also cited a general sense of restlessness from within Europe to the new US administration.
“People are not sure of what the United States wants to do,” he said. “It is difficult for leaders to constantly respond to unclear comments.”
