Actual Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has flatly denied the suggestion that he would resign at the end of the season and insisted he intends to remain in the Spanish capital for another four years.
Rumors emerged earlier this week about Ancelotti’s imminent departure, claiming the 65-year-old seen-it-all coach had seen enough. Despite having already won two trophies this season, doubts have been raised about the Italian icon’s tactical decisions.
Ancelotti was criticized for his enthusiastic attitude in the final of the Spanish Super Cup in January, when his team was beaten for the second time this season by Barcelona. There have also been suggestions that the manager and the club’s hierarchy have clashed over the transfer strategy.
However, Ancelotti does not want to be anywhere else at least until the end of his contract, which expires in 2026, and perhaps even longer.
“The date of my departure from this club will never be decided by me, in any way,” the Actual Madrid coach told the assembled media on Tuesday. “That day will come, but I don’t know when it will be, it’s not for me to decide. It could be tomorrow after the game, the next game, a year from now or five years from now. I have an advantage and I have a goal.”
This declaration of intent came shortly after Florentino Pérez extended the presidency of the club until 2029, a date that attracted Ancelotti. “We will have Florentino Pérez here for four more years and he, who knows me very well, knows that the goal is to be here for another four more years and for us to say goodbye together, with all the love in the world,” he stated. Pérez has a strong working relationship with Ancelotti, but that did not stop him from firing the coach in May 2015, a short year after he ended the club’s endless wait for a tenth European Cup.
“The affection that the players and the fans have for Carlo is the same that I myself have for him,” Pérez said then, although he warned: “The demands here in Actual Madrid are very high.”
