Delhi is gearing up for the upcoming elections to the 70-member Delhi Assembly, scheduled to be held on February 5 in a single phase, with the counting of votes set for February 8.
If this is your first time voting, here is a step-by-step guide on how to cast your vote:
Register your name
To exercise your right to vote, the main requirement is that your name be included in the electoral roll (also known as the voters list). All citizens of India who are 18 years of age on January 1 of the year in which the electoral roll is prepared are eligible to register as voters in the electoral district where they normally reside. First-time voters can complete their registration through the Election Commission of India website.
Locate your polling station
Voters can go to or use the Voter Helpline app (Android) and the Voter Helpline app (iOS) to find your polling booth.
Bring your voter identification document
Make sure you carry your voter ID card or Elector Photo Identity Card (EPIC) or any other documentary evidence as prescribed by the Election Commission of India.
Voting process
Upon arrival at the polling station, entry will be regulated by queues.
-
The first election official will check your name on the voter list and verify your ID proof.
-
The first election official will then call out your name and serial number so that election agents are aware of your presence and your identity is not questioned.
-
The second election official will dye your left index finger, give you a voter ballot, and take your signature on a voter register.
-
You must deposit your ballot with the third election official, show your inked finger, and then go to the polling station.
-
Register your vote by pressing the ballot button opposite the symbol of the candidate of your choice once on the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM). The red lamp will shine next to that candidate’s name and symbol. You will hear a beep confirming your selection.
-
Check the receipt that appears in the transparent window of the VVPAT machine. The voucher with the serial number, name and symbol of the candidate must be seen for 7 seconds before falling into the sealed VVPAT box.
-
In case there is a discrepancy between the vote cast and the VVPAT, the voter can approach the president and lodge a complaint.
