Second-seeded Iga Swiatek advanced to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open on Monday with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Germany’s Eva Lys in Melbourne, Australia.
Swiatek needed just 59 minutes to defeat lucky loser Lys. Swiatek, a five-time Main winner, has lost just 11 games in her first four matches of the tournament.
“I’m definitely happy that I played efficiently,” Poland’s Swiatek said. “I felt pretty confident. So from the beginning I just pushed. “I knew I could make an impact with that.”
Swiatek had 28 winners, Lys recorded only seven and lost only nine points on serve.
In the quarterfinals, Swiatek will face Emma Navarro, the No. 8 seed. The two have not met since 2018, when they met in an ITF W80 event in South Carolina, won by Swiatek, when they were both 17 years old. .
On Monday, Navarro defeated No. 9 seed Daria Kasatkina of Russia, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, in a match that featured 17 breaks of serve. Navarro converted nine of her 25 opportunities, and Kasatkina won eight of her 11 break points.
Navarro will play his third consecutive Grand Slam final quarter. She reached the semifinals of the US Open last fall, losing to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka.
“Of course, I have to treat Emma like a player I never played with,” Swiatek said. “We both made great progress from the moment we faced each other. Your journey has been quite pleasant and surprising. I watched the US Open matches. “She played very well, fighting for every point and for everything.”
Navarro agreed that many things have changed since their meeting as teenagers.
“When I look back on my tennis career, I feel like there weren’t many times where I was totally off the court,” Navarro said, “and I definitely was a little off the court playing with it. We played at my home club in Charleston and I thought, ‘Wow, this girl is pretty good.’
“Circumstances are definitely different now. I feel like I’m pretty good too. “I’m ready for a good challenge.”
No. 19 seed Madison Keys became the third American, joining Navarro and Coco Gauff, to reach the round of 16 when she defeated No. 6 seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan 6-3, 1-6 , 6-3 in one hour, 49 minutes.
Keys will be vying to reach her third Australian Open semi-final, having done so in 2015 and 2022, when she faces No. 28 Elina Svitolina. The Ukrainian beat Russian Veronika Kudermetova 6-4, 6-1.
