CapCut suspends service in US along with TikTok amid ban

Another popular social media app is disappearing in the United States along with tik tok.

If you haven’t been aware, a new law passed last year mandated that TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, sell its ownership by January 19, 2025. If it didn’t, the social media platform had to be removed from the Retailer App.

ByteDance has refused to sell the app, meaning the ban will go into effect.

Unfortunately, TikTok is not the only platform ByteDance owns. The company is also the parent of video editing service CapCut, which suspended its service shortly before the clock struck midnight on January 19.

“Sorry, CapCut is not available at this time,” the app says. landing page read. “In the US, a new law has been passed prohibiting CapCut. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use CapCut for now. Rest assured, we are working to restore our service in the US. Stay tuned! In the meantime, you can still manage your account data.”

As recently as this week, USA today noted that it was unclear whether CapCut would also be affected by the law targeting TikTok.

However, it seems the answer is clear: CapCut, along with TikTok, will not be available to US users for the foreseeable future.

Just days before the ban went into effect, the Supreme Court denied a request to hear a case striking down the law. However, donald trump has signaled that he is interested in reassessing the situation once he takes office on Monday (January 20).
