Slaughter after identifying more cases of bird flu on farms

Outbreaks of bird flu have been confirmed on poultry farms in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said that as a result, all birds at one facility near Pocklington and another near Mablethorpe, East Lindsey, would be humanely euthanised.

A nearly three-kilometer (two-mile) protection zone and an eight-mile (10-kilometer) surveillance zone were also declared around the sites, Defra added.

The measures would restrict the movement of poultry, meat and eggs in the area, a spokesman said.

There have recently been several outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1.

Cases have previously been confirmed at farms near Beverly and at facilities near the town of Nafferton.

The virus spreads through bird droppings and saliva, or through contaminated food and water.

Scientists say the current risk to humans is low.

In December, Defra announced that all poultry and other captive birds in parts of Yorkshire and the east of England had to be kept indoors to prevent the spread of bird flu.
