Chairlift accident leaves dozens injured at a Spanish ski resort in the Pyrenees

At least 30 people have been injured, many of them seriously, in a chairlift accident in the Spanish ski resort of Astún, in the Pyrenees, emergency services and local media reported.

LISBON, Portugal — At least 30 people have been injured, some seriously, in a chairlift accident in the Spanish ski resort of Astún, in the Pyrenees mountain range, emergency services and local media reported this Saturday.

Nine of the injured are in very serious condition, while eight others are moderately injured, they said.

State television channel TVE reported that around 80 people were trapped on the chairlift. The cause of the incident is still unknown.

Several helicopters are working in the area to rescue the skiers who are still trapped and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.

Images and videos on social media appeared to show several people lying in the snow below the ski lift.

The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, said he was “shocked” by the news of the accident and expressed his closeness to the injured and their families.
