The distinguished team manager for the leading men’s heavyweight boxer at the Paris Olympics has passed away within the confines of the athletes’ village in Saint-Denis.
Lionel Elika Fatupaito expired on Friday morning, local time, within the village, according to a communiqué issued by the Oceania regional assembly of Olympic national committees, representing its Samoan affiliate.
The International Olympic Committee reported that Elika Fatupaito’s death was due to natural causes. On Saturday, the IOC extended “its heartfelt sympathies to the entire Samoan NOC, his family, and friends” through a formal statement.
Accompanying a Samoan squad with a promising medal contender, Ato Plodzicki-Faoagali, Elika Fatupaito’s presence was notable at the Games.
“Words are inadequate to convey my sorrow; rest in peace, Coach Lionel,” Plodzicki-Faoagali posted on Instagram Saturday, honoring his mentor whom he revered as “Grand Master.”
Plodzicki-Faoagali will commence his 92-kilogram bout on Sunday, facing a Belgian adversary in a round-of-16 match. The 25-year-old, born in Australia, is participating in his second Summer Games.
Pauga Talalelei Pauga, president of the Samoan Olympic body, remarked in the Oceania statement: “Lionel was among Samoa’s premier boxing coaches and a staunch advocate of the Olympic spirit.”
The Paris organizing committee expressed deep sorrow upon learning of the loss within the Samoan delegation, extending their thoughts and condolences to his family, loved ones, and the entire delegation.
