Altay Bayindir was the hero as Manchester United beat Arsenal 5-3 on penalties after a thrilling draw in the FA Cup third round at the Emirates Stadium.
A gripping match in north London ended 1-1 after 120 minutes of frenetic action, which saw United take the lead early in the second half through Bruno Fernandes before being leveled by Gabriel Magalhaes’ equaliser.
Diogo Dalot was sent off after receiving two quick bookings, putting United under unnecessary stress and pressure, and his departure was the catalyst for Bayindir to put in a wonderful performance in the closing stages of the game.
Fernandes’ goal was a wonderful first attempt that slipped into the corner of David Raya’s goal: the Portuguese benefited from the good work of Alejandro Garnacho.
Dalot had barely left the contest when Gabriel Magalhaes tied the game with a low deflected shot, before Martin Odegaard missed a penalty for Arsenal – Bayindir crouched to his left to deny the Norwegian.
Kai Havertz and Declan Rice then missed chances before the game went into extra time, but despite the home team pushing for a winner, looking to take advantage of their numerical advantage, they were unable to break down a spirited and tenacious United side.
Havertz was denied a penalty shootout, and United converted all five of his shots to earn a famous victory and a place in the fourth round.
