Newcastle 3-1 Bromley: Player ratings as Magpies recover after initial scare

Newcastle United booked their place in the FA Cup fourth round by coming from behind to beat Bromley 3-1 at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Magpies were riding high heading into this cup tie, and the Toon Army must have thought they would enjoy a serene afternoon. Newcastle’s stellar form has seen them rise to fifth place in the Premier League table, and they recently made a huge leap towards the Carabao Cup final by beating Arsenal 2-0 away from home.

However, Eddie Howe’s side were quickly brought back down to earth by the League 2 side. The heavily rotated coach’s soon-to-be ace was stunned in the early stages. Cameron Congreve achieved what the Gunners had failed to do in midweek by breaking through Martin Dubravka’s defenses with a neat shot from distance.

However, it didn’t take long for the Premier League side to restore parity, with Lewis Miley, who has barely featured this season after returning from a long-term injury, scoring Newcastle’s equaliser.

The hosts took full control afterwards and should have taken the lead through William Osula immediately after Miley’s equaliser. Newcastle’s superiority for the rest of the first half was no surprise as they enjoyed 86% of the ball, but Bromley were stubborn enough to go into the break at 1-1.

Howe wasted no time at the start of the second half with Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes entering the fray, and the former coolly slotted home a penalty from 12 yards to give Newcastle their first lead in the cup tie three minutes after the restart. .

Osula, in a rare outing after arriving in the summer, added a third for the hosts with a great finish, the first for the club. Newcastle’s second-half comfort allowed Howe to add 17-year-old Trevan Sanusi to proceedings for his competitive debut, and the Magpies maintained their two-goal lead without any problems in the closing stages.
