The United States and Canada would make “a great nation” together, the president-elect has said

US President-elect Donald Trump has suggested that Canada should formally become the 51st US state, after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned as party leader.

Trudeau resigned on Monday, citing “internal battles” in the Liberal Party. He will remain interim prime minister until the party elects a new leader, ahead of new parliamentary elections scheduled for before the end of October.

“Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st state.” Trump posted Fact Social on his platform on Monday afternoon. “The United States can no longer suffer the huge trade deficits and subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. “Justin Trudeau knew it and resigned.”

yes canada “merged” with the United States, there would be no tariffs, Canadians would pay lower taxes and both would be “completely safe” of “The threat of Russian and Chinese ships constantly surrounding them.” Trump added. “Together, what a great Nation we would be!!!”

Trudeau’s resignation appears to have been prompted, at least in part, by Trump’s threat to impose a 25% tariff on goods crossing from Canada and Mexico. The next president accused both neighbors of allowing the entry of illegal immigrants, “crime and drugs” enter the United States, while accumulating unfair trade surpluses with Washington through the abuse of free trade agreements. The tariff threat prompted the resignation of Trudeau’s vice president, Chrystia Freeland, opening a rift between the Liberals.

The Canadian leader attempted to discuss the issue directly with Trump, flying to the president-elect’s Florida residence in early December. However, during a dinner at Mar-a-Lago, Trump jokingly called out Trudeau. “governor” and joked that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States.

Trump has continued to joke since then, speculating that Canada could even split into two states, one conservative and one liberal. He has also talked about acquiring Greenland, the Arctic island off the northeast coast of Canada that is an autonomous territory of Denmark.

Canada was formed from the remaining British possessions in North America after the original 13 colonies gained their independence in the 18th century. While much of official Ottawa has been dismissive of Trump’s unification speech, investor and television personality Kevin O’Leary has said about half the country would accept it.

Trump’s post about Canada came shortly after the US Congress voted to certify the results of the 2024 presidential election, ensuring that he will be sworn in as the 47th president in two weeks.
