Who will replace Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister of Canada?

In a resignation letter written in the context of Donald Trump’s tariff threats, Freeland said Canada could not afford “gimmicks.”

“Our country faces a serious challenge. That means keeping our fiscal powder dry today, so we have the reserves we may need for a next tariff war.”

In her previous role as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Freehand oversaw the renegotiation of a free trade agreement between Canada, the United States and Mexico.

The Harvard graduate, 59, served as head of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, and is highly regarded by Trudeau, who had tried to appoint him to his cabinet.

He has never held public office but has reportedly been speaking to members of the Liberal Party in recent weeks as the Prime Minister’s fortunes appeared to worsen.

Joly, 45, represents the Montreal area and was appointed foreign minister in October 2021.

Joly, an Oxford graduate, took on her role when Russia began amassing troops on the Ukrainian border. He visited the country to underline Canada’s support, just a month before Vladimir Putin ordered his invasion.

The Minister for Innovation, Science and Industry was previously Foreign Minister and entered Parliament in 2015, having spent most of his working life as a businessman.

The 54-year-old is known for having a lot of energy and comes from the politically important province of Quebec.

Anita Anand

The lawyer and academic entered politics in 2019 when she was elected to represent Oakville, near Toronto. The 57-year-old, who also studied at Oxford, served as Procurement Minister during the Covid pandemic.

She currently serves as Minister of Transport and Trade Inside.
