OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company now has a fundamental understanding of how to build normal artificial intelligence (AGI) and is shifting its focus toward superintelligence. Altman highlighted that superintelligence could reshape the world and accelerate scientific discovery and innovation to a point beyond human capabilities. While the CEO didn’t share any roadmap, he said the world will get its first look at the technology in the coming years. OpenAI has also not shown any AI models with AGI capabilities so far.
OpenAI CEO emphasizes superintelligence
On his private blog, Altman published an article focused on the New Year. mail in which he analyzed the company’s journey and shared where it is headed in the near future. The OpenAI CEO also highlighted that the company was created nine years ago as a non-profit research laboratory and did not become relevant in the technology industry until the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. He also revealed that the AI chatbot was called initially “Chat With GPT-3.5”.
Looking ahead, Altman stated that the company had acquired a traditional and fundamental understanding of building AGI systems and added that the first AI agents could join the workforce in 2025. Specifically, it is believed that an AI agent Multi-step normal-purpose design would require some level of AGI to address complex tasks in today’s world. OpenAI has not yet released its first AI agent.
“We love our current products, but we are here for a glorious future. With superintelligence we can do anything else. “Super-smart tools could greatly accelerate scientific discovery and innovation far beyond what we are capable of on our own, and in turn vastly increase abundance and prosperity,” he added.
After making the bold statement, the CEO of OpenAI assured that although it sounds like science fiction, the company is confident of achieving superintelligence in the coming years. Altman also emphasized the need to “act very carefully” with superintelligence, while it was important to maximize the broad benefits and empowerment.
Currently, the AI company is rumored to be working on GPT-5, which is also said to be codenamed Project Orion. Additionally, OpenAI has teased the o3 series of AI models focused on advanced reasoning, which is expected to launch later this year.
