Russell Crowe has described suggestions he is looking to sell the NRL South Sydney club as “nonsense”.
Reports emerged on Monday that the Hollywood actor was set to sell his 25 per cent stake in the Rabbitohs, which he bought with businessman Peter Holmes à Court docket for $3 million in 2006.
But in a statement provided to AAP, Crowe advised journalists to make the most of the Australian weather rather than worrying about their businesses.
“Just tell them it’s nonsense and advise them to enjoy the summer sun,” Crowe said.
The Rabbitohs declined to comment publicly when contacted by the AAP.
South Sydney finished the 2006 season in last place after Crowe and Holmes à Court docket purchased the team earlier that year, but returned to ultimate in 2007 for the first time since 1989.
Holmes à Court docket sold his share in 2014, the same year Souths achieved a fairytale grand final victory over Canterbury. It marked the Rabbitohs’ first premiership since 1971.
Today, Crowe owns a 25 per cent stake in the Rabbitohs, with James Packer, tech tycoon Mike Cannon-Brookes and members of the Souths each owning a quarter.
Ahead of the 2025 season, the Rabbitohs embark on a new chapter on the field.
Souths finished the 2024 season in 16th place with their fewest wins since 2006, but are hoping to turn things around, with coach Wayne Bennett returning to the club this year.
