The water level of Mettur Dam on Saturday was 119.14 feet against its total capacity of 120 feet. The storage level stood at 92.10 TMC against its total capacity of 93.47 TMC. The inflow to the dam was reduced to 1,128 cusecs from Friday’s inflow of 1,992 cusecs. The amount of water discharged from the dam to the Cauvery river for delta irrigation and canal irrigation continued to be 12,000 cusecs and 300 cusecs, respectively.
Man arrested for murdering his uncle in Salem
Police arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly murdering his uncle. According to the police, S. Selvaraj, of Puthiragoundampalayam, was an alcoholic and regularly borrowed money from residents to drink. On Friday, he demanded money from his uncle Periasamy, 67, who lived in the same town. When he refused, a fight ensued between them, during which Selvaraj allegedly killed Periasamy and cut off his head. He also threatened people who tried to stop him. Yethapur police, on receiving information, reached the spot and sent the body to Salem Government Hospital for autopsy. Police registered a case, arrested Selvaraj and remanded him on Saturday.
Store catches fire in Salem
A puffed rice shop in Salem’s Kamandapatti Pirivu caught fire, destroying most of its products. Black smoke began emanating early on Saturday from the shop, owned by Murugan, a resident of Mecheri, and spread throughout the shop. According to information, personnel from the Omalur Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and extinguished the fire. But the puffed rice and snacks in the store were destroyed by the fire. Omalur police are investigating the incident.
