The Dark Energy Camera (DECam) has captured a remarkable image of the Antlia cluster, showing a wide range of galaxies located approximately 130 million light years from Earth in the Antlia constellation. With more than 230 identified galaxies, including lenticular, irregular and ultracompact dwarfs, the cluster is dominated by two elliptical giants, NGC 3268 and NGC 3258. This image was produced at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile, highlighting the intricate details of this collection of galaxies.
Antlia Cluster Project
As reported Per Phys.org, the Antlia Cluster, also known as Abell S636, has been extensively studied through the Antlia Cluster Project, which involves observations from ground-based telescopes and space observatories. Researchers have identified faint dwarf galaxies, compact ellipticals, and compact blue dwarfs within the cluster, offering insights into galaxy evolution and the role of dark matter. X-ray studies have suggested that the cluster may be the result of the merger of smaller groups, supported by a “rope” of globular clusters detected near the central galaxies.
Types of galaxies and their importance
Within the cluster, lenticular galaxies abound, known for their disk-shaped structure and minimal star formation. Other types of rare galaxies, such as ultradiffuse and spheroidal dwarf galaxies, could also be present, awaiting confirmation. Observational advances have allowed astronomers to discover these low-luminosity galaxies, improving the understanding of their characteristics and formation.
Future studies and dark matter studies
The Legacy Survey of House and Time (LSST), expected to take place at NSF-DOE’s Vera C. Rubin Observatory, aims to map intracluster light in thousands of galaxy clusters. These data will help decode the distribution of dark matter and the large-scale history of the universe. Intracluster light, which arises from displaced stars during interactions between galaxies, provides a window into these cosmic phenomena.
