India’s stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah suffered an injury on Day 2 of the ongoing fifth and final Test against Australia on Saturday. The star pacer experienced discomfort and was taken to a local hospital for scans, having bowled just one after lunch at the Sydney Cricket Floor. Speaking at a press conference after the close of play on Day 2, pacer Prasidh Krishna revealed that Bumrah suffered back spasms, putting his participation on Day 3 in major doubt.

Krishna also revealed that the team is waiting for an update from the medical staff on the availability of the Star Pacer.

“I had a spasm in my back. They had done scans on him. The medical team is monitoring him. So we will know when the medical team contacts us,” Krishna told reporters.

However, according to a report in the Occasions of India, Bumrah is “fine” to bat. Adding that the team will make a decision on his participation as a bowler based on how he feels in the morning.

“Bumrah was taken for a precautionary examination after a back spasm, but nothing serious at the moment. He should be fine to bat, but a final decision on his bowling will be made based on how he feels in the morning. So let’s see and The medical team is following him closely,” the report states.

In Bumrah’s absence, Prasidh Krishna (3-42), Mohammed Siraj (3-51) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (2-32) stepped forward to fill the void and dismiss Australia after they resumed the match with 9 -1.

At the close in Sydney, India were 141-6 with Ravindra Jadeja on eight and Washington Sundar on six after dismissing Australia for 181 in response to their 185 in the first innings.

Rishabh Pant had smashed a quick fifty to help India extend their lead to four from the first innings.

Pant signaled his intention by hitting a six off his first ball and reached 50 after just 29 deliveries with another big shot that cleared the ropes.

Australia led the series 2-1 and India needed a win at the Sydney Cricket Floor to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
