Rohit Sharma has broken his silence since he “chose to rest” from the India vs Australia fifth Test in Sydney. “I retired, that’s what I would say. The talk I had with the coach and the selector was very easy, I couldn’t score runs with the bat. I’m not in shape. This is an important match, we need a victory. We couldn’t get many players out who were out of shape. They supported my decision, which was difficult for me,” he said on Star Sports activities.
“The reflection process lasted quite a long time. The decision was made after coming here. After Melbourne came New Year’s Day. That day I didn’t want to tell the coach or the selector about this. I tried but I couldn’t. We scored and for me it was important to take a step away from this game.”
Rohit also clarified that he will not announce his retirement.
“I don’t believe in what will happen five months later. I want to focus on the present. This decision is not a withdrawal decision. I’m not going to walk away from the game. But, for this game I am out because I am not scoring with the bat. There’s no guarantee that after five months I won’t score runs. Every day life changes,” he said.
“At the same time I have to be realistic. I’ve played this sport for so long. No one from the outside can decide when I should leave, sit down or lead the team. I am sensible, mature, father of two children. “I know what I want in life.”
When the host said, “It was a pleasure having you as India captain,” Rohit replied, “Arre kahin ja nahi raha hu foremost (I’m not going anywhere).”
