Novak Djokovic was surprised 7-6 (4) 6-2 by Matteo Berrettini in the first round of the Qatar Open on Tuesday when the Italian enjoyed his first victory over former world number one.

Berrettini played magnificently to knock out the champion twice in an hour 35 minutes to ensure his first victory against a High 10 opponent since January 2023.

“It’s something that I have been looking for,” said former world number Berrettini, who had lost the four previous games against Serbian.

“I played against him in the most important tournaments on the tour, I had the honor and pleasure of playing against him. I wish I could have won one of those games too. ”

World number 35 Berrettini, voted the ATP player back last year, faces the Dutch Tallon Griekspoor in the next round.

The winner of the Grand Slam of 24 times, Djokovic, with the objective of a 100 ATP title, was playing his first singles game since he retired in the semifinals of the Australian Open due to an injury to the hamstrings.

The 37 -year -old, who last week said he was “almost completely recovered,” had not lost a first round game since his defeat of 2022 Monte Carlo Masters by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Djokovic will now focus his attention on the doubles event, combining with the Spanish Fernando Verdasco against Finn Harri Heliovaara and Henry Pattem of Great Britain in the Closing rooms.
