Chelsea vs Wolves: preview, predictions and lineups

Chelsea are looking to end their depressing run of five Premier League games without a win when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night.

The Blues have stumbled to draws or defeats in games against Everton, Fulham, Ipswich City, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth, and the brief title contenders are now looking to hold on to their place in the Champions League qualification places.

While Chelsea are going through a rough patch, they can take solace in their most recent encounter with Wolves. After suffering three consecutive defeats to the Midlands side, Noni Madueke’s hat-trick inspired the Blues to a 6-2 victory at Molineux in August.

The six-goal defeat came under Gary O’Neil and new coach Vitor Pereira will be eager to improve on that result and his performance on Monday night. Two defeats in a row mean Wolves are still frantically fighting relegation, but they have shown signs of life under the Portuguese manager.

here it is 90 minutes prior to the crash.

Cole Palmer

Enzo Maresca has revealed that talisman Cole Palmer is one of the doubts ahead of Monday’s game. The attacking midfielder, along with Levi Colwill, Romeo Lavia and Enzo Fernández, did not train on Friday and will be evaluated closer to kick-off.

The Blues are still without long-term absentees Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile in defence, the former likely to miss the rest of the season, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Corridor is also not in the engine room.

Mykhailo Mudryk remains suspended after failing an anti-doping test.

Chelsea’s predicted lineup against Wolves (4-2-3-1): Sanchez; James, Chalobah, Colwill, Cucurella; Caicedo, Fernández; Neto, Palmer, Sancho; Jackson.

Matheus Cunha

The good news for Pereira was that Matheus Cunha returned from suspension against Newcastle, although the Wolves star was unable to prevent his side’s 3-0 defeat at St James’ Park.

Worse still, Wolves are still without many players for the trip to Stamford Bridge, with Toti Gomes and Yerson Mosquera absent in defense. The latter will miss the remainder of the season.

Enzo González and Sasa Kalajdzic are long-term absentees, while Boubacar Traoré is yet to return despite being close to returning to the first team.

Wolves vs Chelsea predicted lineup (3-4-3): in; Doherty, S. Bueno, Agbadou; Semedo, André, J. Gomes, Ait-Nouri; Guedes, Cunha; Larsen Beach.

Chelsea have proven to be unpredictable in recent weeks, failing to win five games in a row despite going into each game as favourites. They are expected to triumph on Monday night too, although their steadiness at home is not particularly inspiring (G4, E4, P2).

However, their defensive problems and possible absences ahead of the clash could prove prosperous for their visitors, who have their own attacking threats in the form of the returning Cunha and powerful striker Jorgen Strand Larsen.

It will probably be an entertaining affair, and Chelsea might just get a big win.

Prediction: Chelsea 3-2 Wolves
