Tottenham Hotspur have activated the one-year extension option on Son Heung-min’s contract, keeping the club captain in north London until June 2026.

Only four players in Spurs’ 143-year history have scored more goals than Son, who moved to the N17 in 2015. After a difficult start to his Tottenham career, the South Korean star struck up a prolific relationship with Harry Kane, one of Few players with more Spurs goals than Son.

After Kane moved to Bayern Munich in 2023, Son was named club captain. The former Premier League Golden Boot winner finished as top scorer during Ange Postecoglou’s debut season in the English capital, but has been struggling to regain his form this season.

Son was even benched for Tottenham’s most recent Premier League fixture, only coming on for the final half hour of the 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday.

Three days later, the club confirmed that Son, who would become a free agent this summer, will remain in north London. A statement from the club said: “We are delighted to announce that we have exercised the option to extend Heung-Min Son’s contract, which will now run until the summer of 2026.

“Sonny, 32, joined the Membership in August 2015 and has become a global star during his time with us and a great modern-day player for Tottenham Hotspur.”

Barcelona had been linked with a move for Son as he approached free agency, despite suffering a disappointing campaign.

Son spent much of last season as Tottenham’s centre-forward in Kane’s absence and while Richarlison watched from the treatment room. However, the arrival of Dominic Solanke in the summer has forced the aging striker back to left wing, moving him further away from goal, which has contributed to his depressing tally of five goals in 17 league games so far.

With Tottenham interested in a January move for the Paris Saint-Germain centre-forward, Son may not return to the center any time soon.
