The daughter-in-law of a woman who baked a deadly Christmas cake for her family has reportedly been arrested by police on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.
Deise Moura is married to Diego, son of Zeli Dos Anjos, who baked a traditional Brazilian dessert during the festive period that killed his sisters and niece.
Zeli, 61, is still in hospital fighting for his life after the tragic meeting near Porto Alegre, southern Brazil, on December 23.
She is the only one of the three sisters to survive what appears to be poisoning after police found arsenic in the blood of those who ate the cake.
Her niece Tatiana Denize Silva dos Anjos, 43, and her sister Maida Berenice Flores da Silva, 58, died after eating the dessert when they suffered cardiac arrest.
Zeli’s daughter-in-law Deise was arrested at her home in Nova Santa Rita on Sunday night. online mail information.
Torres Police Chief Marcus Vinicius Veloso reportedly confirmed to the outlet that the mother of one was being held on a triple murder charge.
He said: “The woman was arrested for triple homicide and triple attempted homicide.
“She was initially taken to a Canoas police station, then to the Torres police station and is now in the city’s women’s prison, at this moment we cannot say anything more.”
Deise allegedly baked the cake at Zeli’s house on December 23 before bringing it to Maida’s apartment for the family celebration.
Police confiscated ingredients such as flour and nuts, as well as pesticides, from the property.
According to one of the researchers, the cake had a strange “spicy” and “peppery” taste, but this did not stop the Brazilian family from eating it.
While arsenic is a highly toxic substance, odorless and tasteless, the spiciness found is not common in sweet pastries.
Police previously announced they had launched a homicide investigation, but did not rule out the possibility that the Christmas tragedy was an accident.
Last week they said they were “not aware of any disputes within the family” but promised to keep an open mind.
Authorities are still waiting for full lab test results following the horrific incident.
Tatiana’s 10-year-old son Matheus, Zeli’s great-nephew, was also taken to the hospital.
He was only released last Friday.
Meanwhile, Zeli’s husband, Paulo, will be exhumed as police investigate his death from food poisoning a few months ago.
Family members told MailOnline that both he and Zeli fell ill after eating mashed bananas they grew in their garden a few months ago.
Zeli was reportedly taken to hospital, while Paulo died a few hours after being admitted.
His body will be exhumed on Thursday for further tests.
Deise’s husband, Diego, is reportedly 39 years old and the mother of one is also possibly in her early 30s.
