According to Canadian media, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to resign from office on Monday.

The news was first reported by the Globe and Mail on Sunday night, citing three sources. The outlet said it is unclear when exactly the Liberal Party leader will resign, but a resignation is expected to occur before a national group meeting on Wednesday.

The news comes as Trudeau’s popularity continues to decline in Canada, which is scheduled for national elections on October 20 of this year. The country continues to suffer from a real estate crisis, a drop in GDP per capita and high inflation, among other problems.

According to Canadian pollster Angus Reid, Trudeau has a disapproval rating of around 68% as of December 24, with a meager 28% of Canadians supporting him.

The possible resignation would also come after Trudeau, who became prime minister in 2015, faced a difficult few months in politics. In September, he faced a no-confidence motion in parliament that later failed, despite the Conservative Party’s efforts to remove him from office.

On December 16, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced she was leaving Trudeau’s cabinet, dealing a blow to the prime minister. In his resignation letter he stated that the only “honest and viable path” was to leave the Cabinet.

“Over the past few weeks, you and I have found ourselves at odds over what is the best path forward for Canada,” wrote Freeland, who was previously seen as a Trudeau loyalist.

“Our country faces a serious challenge,” the letter adds. “That means keeping our fiscal powder dry today, so we have the reserves we may need for a next tariff war.”

Later in December, one of Trudeau’s key allies, New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh, said he planned to table a formal no-confidence motion on January 27.

“No matter who leads the Liberal Party, this government’s time is up. We will table a clear no-confidence motion in the next session of the House of Commons,” Singh said.

Trudeau’s personal decisions have also sparked backlash from his opponents. In late November, Trudeau faced international criticism after he was seen dancing at a Taylor Swift concert in Toronto while destructive riots were taking place in his hometown of Montreal.

Don Stewart, a Member of Parliament (MP) representing part of Toronto, criticized the prime minister in a post on X.

“Lawless protesters rampage through Montreal in violent protest. The Prime Minister dances,” wrote the Canadian politician. “This is the Canada built by the Liberal government.”

“Bring back law and order, safe streets and communities to the Canada we once knew and loved,” Stewart added. Trudeau later denounced lawlessness and called the riots “appalling.”
