The California Highway Patrol took to social media to warn state residents about a new scam doing the rounds.

“This is NOT how the AMBER Alert system works!” the post said.

The Amber Alert, part of a package of child safety laws signed by Congress in 2003, is named after 9-year-old Amber Hagerman of Arlington, Texas, who was abducted and murdered in 1996.

The nationwide alert system was created to quickly inform the public about child abductions.
