Live: Australia vs India at the SCG

1st over: Mohammed Siraj bowls the first over

With Jasprit Bumrah off the field, Mohammed Siraj will bowl the first ball to Sam Konstas.

The ball goes off the stump and Konstas leaves. That was a tough license.

The second ball of the innings falls on the leg side so that no run can be made.

FOUR WIDTHS. Siraj comes down the leg and beats wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Five races for Australia.

The players and referees are on the field.

Everything is scaled back to one session.

If Australia scores 162 runs, they will win the series 3-1 and regain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

If India take 10 wickets, the series is tied and they retain the trophy.

Jasprit Bumrah is not on the field. A great advance in this Check Match.

Jasprit Bumrah is NOT on the field

Virat Kohli is speaking to the team ahead of this bowling and it seems like Jasprit Bumrah is still in the sheds.

So there you have it. Looks like at least the bowling alley won’t open.

We will have our answer to Bumrah’s question in 10 minutes.

So, can Bumrah open the bowling alley or not?

– Qrious

Jasprit Bumrah looked limited with the bat and came out a point later than usual.

If you bowl well, it feels like a small miracle, but regardless of whether you are at 100 per cent, 70 per cent or not bowling at all, Australia cannot afford to relax in any way because this field is a minefield.

Scott Boland cleanly bowls Jasprit Bumrah and takes his sixth wicket for the innings and tenth for the match.

India are all out for 157, a lead of 161. It doesn’t sound like much, but from what we’ve seen this morning, batting on this pitch doesn’t look any easier today than it has in the last two days.

40th place: Prasidh Krishna takes on India 9-156

The lead is 160 and I wouldn’t expect it to grow much more unless Bumrah gets something.

Krishna is misplaced while defending to mid-off and Bumrah calls him out. Every career in this field is invaluable. There is no time to cultivate the strike.

EDGED! Taken! Scott Boland has five wickets

Mohammed Siraj hangs up the bat and moves towards first slip where Usman Khawaja catches the ball from the bottom. There was a little bubble but it went in.

And Scott Boland has his first five-wicket haul since taking 6-7 on his MCG Ashes debut.

40th up: Scott Boland arrives

Pat Cummins threatens to take away his five-wicket haul.

Boland deflects towards Siraj who can’t give him any bat.

Top 39: Jasprit Bumrah batting with back problem

Bumrah’s attempt heads towards the fences. That’s not always easy to do with a crooked back, so let’s see what you can do now.

Oh, it doesn’t look healthy. He frees up some space and prepares to hit, but he can’t really throw, he just throws it back to the thrower.

Oh! He hits like crazy at a short one and misses. I think I could hear his lumbar vertebrae screaming.

I GUESSED IT! Cummins again and India is 8-156

Cummins widens and leans in, driving deeper and castles him through the gate.

Captain Jasprit Bumrah comes out to bat. Let’s see how this goes.

Top 39: Cummins is at it again

Siraj approaches the gully and they sneak in for a single off the bounce of Beau Webster. Good race from Washington.

Another ball soars towards Washington and finds the shoulder of the bat. It would have been cut with a silly point, but there is no one under the helmet because long balls hurt. And the Australians are trying to keep runs scored to a minimum.

38th over: Scott Boland is bowling hand grenades

Another leans in and walks away. Anything outside the left-hander’s off-stump is unplayable now.

Almost every delivery is a play and a mistake by Washington at this point. Actually, this bowl is doing too much. Hitters can barely put anything on him.

Boland is slowly bringing his line closer and is now threatening the off stump. Holy shit.

Another point, and that’s a maiden when Washington picks Sam Konstas off square leg. Thus, Mohammed Siraj will have to face at least one ball to start the next one again.

37th place: Cummins is back in

Washington Sundar leaves Cummins’ first ball, which has a further bounce.

Another edge falls safely! They just moved Beau Webster from third place to the gully, and that ball sailed right between those two spots.

Cummins tilts and a ball dies out of bounds on the way to the field as it slides through a crack.

Oh, this pitch is becoming almost unhittable.

A more variable bounce from outside and Washington takes a late cut to a ball that comes in and stays low.

Washington defends and they dive for a single. Siraj lunges to gain ground and feels some pain. Looks like he got hurt too. That is not what India needs. But he hasn’t called the coach. It must be fine.

36th place: Mohammed Siraj is out there

Jasprit Bumrah would normally get out before Siraj, which tells you something about his reluctance to bat unless absolutely necessary.

Scott Boland is close to Siraj and cuts him in half with a ball that goes wildly across Siraj’s gate and over the stumps.

Siraj deftly guides a couple behind the point. It should have been three, but Washington Sundar slips.

EDGED! But he missed Beau’s buckets at third slip. Oh, so close.

Hit again.

WOW! Siraj goes for the fences with a ball well outside off-stump and misses everything. That was six if he connected and probably cleared the slips even with a slight lead. Is that the only way to beat this challenging deck?

I HAVE IT! Cummins gets first of the day

Angled away and finding the outside edge towards Alex Carey.

Ravindra Jadeja couldn’t do much about it. He tried to play with soft hands and protect his stump, but it moved enough to cause the cut.

“He’s done everything right as a batsman and just caught the outside edge,” says Darren Lehmann on ABC Sport.

35th place: How long will Cummins and Boland play together?

Nathan Lyon hasn’t tried it yet.

FOUR! Short, wide and carved to the rope by Jadeja. Bad bowling and he gets what he deserves.

And it continues with a ball that passes just over the outside edge.

34° up: Scott Boland from the other end

It suggests to me that Mitchell Starc’s back is really stuffed.

His first ball is taken with a dead bat into the stands.

Boland steps up and finds the pad again, but the referee rightly denies his appeal. Leg too high and too low.

Washington leaves out the last couple. And that’s a typical Boland test maiden.

33rd place: Pat Cummins starts day three at the SCG

Ravindra Jadeja pulls us away with a single down the leg side.

Oh, Washington almost clips one off Sam Konstas at front square leg, but it bounces an inch in front of his hands as he lunges forward.

Half shout for LBW, but lowering his leg and that’s the end of the over.

The players are in the middle.

We’re all set for the first ball of the day, and it will be Australia’s own bowling captain, Pat Cummins, who will get things going.
