Mike Johnson re-elected House Speaker
Mike Johnson secured the speakership of the House of Representatives on Friday as the 119th Congress convened, overcoming initial resistance within his own party. Johnson failed to reach the necessary 218 votes in the first round. Subsequently, two Republican representatives, Ralph Norman of South Carolina and Keith Self of Texas, changed their votes, allowing Johnson to win in the runoff.
Trump reportedly spoke with Norman and Self before changing their votes, according to Punchbowl Information. With 434 members present, Johnson needed 218 votes to win. Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky cast the lone dissenting vote.
Johnson faced opposition from some Republicans and worked to secure their support before the vote. The failure to elect a president could have disrupted Congress’ planned certification of Trump’s victory in the 2024 election on Monday.
“We don’t have time for drama,” Johnson commented upon arriving at the Capitol.
