While creating one of the most erotic scenes of the year, Halina Reijn discovered that truth is often hornier than fiction.

“Milk is, of course, an archetype. We have seen it in other films,” he explained to IndieWire. “It is a great symbol of our animal side.”
Reijn added: “It happened to me. I was playing in Belgium on stage, I came off stage, I had a really good run and I thought, ‘Oh my God!’ I felt very good about myself for one night in my life. All my colleagues were like, ‘No, we’re going to bed.’ They are all boring. I was completely alone. I went to a bar and ordered something boring like a Coca-Cola Mild because I didn’t drink at the time because I was a management fanatic. There was a young Belgian actor (I can’t say who he is), but he was famous. I knew about him. I had never spoken to him. He was at least 15 years younger than me and asked me for a glass of milk. I thought it was something incredible, attractive and very brave, so I wanted to reward him by drinking it all, and I did. To be honest, it made me a little nauseous because it was cow’s milk. “It was in the past.”
Although unfortunately the actor never called me “good girl,” Reijn joked: “I wish he did.” He just left. I didn’t have sex with him or anything.

“But when I was writing, I thought it was one of the most exciting moments of my life. There was not even contact,” he explained. “That’s what fascinates me about sex. For me, actual, shocking sex isn’t usually two bodies crashing into each other at all. For me, contemporary, impactful sex is about what’s in the mind. Everything is suggestion. It’s all imagination. (Romy) crawling on a dirty stained carpet and licking candy out of his hand, and him petting her like she was an animal, that, to me, is really horny. For me, actual sex acts on screen are pretty boring, so we only get two brief moments of that.”
A24’s erotic workplace thriller stars Kidman as Romy, a powerful CEO who risks her life’s job when she begins a torrid affair with her much younger intern Samuel (Dickinson).
