Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has confirmed that the club has activated the one-year extension clause in Harry Maguire’s contract.
The centre-back had entered the final six months of his current contract, but recently revealed his happiness at the first discussions over an extension, describing the situation as “positive”.
While those talks continue, United opted to activate their extension clause to ensure Maguire cannot leave on a free transfer this summer.
“Harry Maguire, we are going to activate our option,” Amorim told the assembled media before his team’s Premier League match against Liverpool.
“I spoke to him this morning and told him that he has to improve on the field, we need him a lot. In addition, he has to improve as a leader. “We all know the situation he had here but we need him very much.” right now, so let’s happily activate the option for him.
“When you look at our team, we are hungry for leaders on the field. “He is a leader, he has to improve that part, he has to improve his game, so we are happy to continue.”
Amorim also confirmed that Amad Diallo is “close” to signing a new deal. The young striker’s current contract runs until the summer but, like Maguire, United can activate a one-year extension if necessary.
