Wicked took the country by storm last year and cameos from Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth were the icing on that deliciously fun cake. It’s an undeniably hit musical and everyone seems to have their favorite songs, including Broadway’s OG Elphaba and Glinda. As you might expect, Menzel and Chenoweth love their respective songs, but some of their favorites aren’t the ones they sang.

I can’t blame her for that. The dedication of Broadway is unmatched and performing your respective character and their songs night after night can get repetitive. Although Elphaba’s songbook is one of the most exciting for modern shows.
Kristin Chenoweth chimed in and confirmed that she knew her Broadway partner’s favorite song and then added her favorite Elphaba song.

It’s a great moment between the four of them, showing love for the characters’ songs of their respective counterpoints. I think it was a smart and pure move to include the OGs in the film and for the press. It’s generated buzz and perhaps helped generate some One Million Mothers-style criticism. Chenoweth intelligently addressed his criticisms front and kept it very similar to Glinda. I don’t know if the film would have been exactly the same without his presence.
It was interesting to learn about original plans for the duo’s cameo and how everything changed in the course of one night. The way they have them seems perfect to me, and it’s a fun, theatrical part of an act where they can really shine. Jon M. Chu revealed that the next Wicked the movie will bring Another Ozian icon, Dorothyand it looks like he’ll have a bigger role than some may expect.
As for Chenoweth and Menzel, hopefully they’ll show up again in Evil: foreverwhich is part of the movie schedule 2025. I also hope they hit the press circuit again and reveal more of their feelings for Elphaba and Glinda. Wicked is still playing in theaters and available on VOD services.
