US launches airstrikes on Yemen

The Pentagon said the attacks hit Houthi command posts and military factories.

US forces have launched multiple airstrikes on the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, hitting what the Pentagon has described as Houthi military targets. The United States and the United Kingdom have stepped up bombing raids on the Arab country since the militant faction attacked Israel with a ballistic missile earlier this month.

The attacks took place on Monday and Tuesday and involved American ships and aircraft, the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees the Pentagon’s military operations in the Middle East, said in a statement on Tuesday.

The targets included a Houthi command and management facility, weapons production plants and ammunition depots, CENTCOM said. Additional strikes targeted a coastal radar site and seven Houthi cruise missiles over the Red Sea, the statement added.

Video footage shared by Iranian media outlet PressTV showed smoke rising from several explosion sites in Sana’a.

US and British forces have been launching sporadic attacks on Houthi targets since last October, when Yemeni militants began attacking Israeli-linked ships in the Red Sea in response to West Jerusalem’s war against Hamas in Gaza. These attacks have increased in scale and frequency since the group attacked Tel Aviv with a ballistic missile earlier this month.

The Houthis fired another ballistic missile at Tel Aviv last week, targeting Ben Gurion Airport. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that the missile was intercepted before it could reach its target.

Following the first attack on Tel Aviv, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had ordered the IDF to “destroy Houthi infrastructure” scam “all its strength.” Despite the IDF launching multiple strikes against Yemen, a spokesman for the group said last week that “intensify our military attacks against Israel… until the crimes of genocide and the siege of Gaza cease.”

Officially known as the Ansar Allah movement, the Houthis currently control about a third of Yemen, roughly corresponding to the territory of the Yemen Arab Republic from 1962 to 1990, including Sana’a and almost the entire western coast of the country. The group emerged as the country’s dominant military faction during the final years of the ongoing civil war.
