When it comes to the dangers of using social media, Jay-Z knows better than anyone, considering the rapper and entertainment mogul has been the subject of a series of scandals that have been widely discussed on social media. Often the best way to handle it is to refrain from joining the chaos or trying to fight it. It seems his mother-in-law, Tina Knowles, doesn’t always follow that course of action, despite Jay-Z’s frequent reminders about the damage social media can cause.
Tina Knowles was recently a guest on the Vogue podcast, The tourwhere he revealed that sometimes he is affected by the noise and hateful comments on social media towards his family. Her daughter, Beyoncé, has had a high-profile relationship with Jay-Z for decades and they have often been the subject of rumors and media scrutiny. While her family has advised her to stay off social media and ignore negative rhetoric, Knowles admitted that she often feels the need to defend and protect her family online. She said (via People):
I am a protector of my children and I feel like that is my job. And, you know, my kids always say, ‘Mom, ignore that.’ But there comes a point where I just say, ‘I’m sorry.’ This is enough. That’s enough.’ Know? Because imagine being a mother and someone is lying about your child. It’s hard to see. … I know (the phone) doesn’t understand what I’m saying and has crazy things. And my son-in-law, Jay, would say, ‘Listen, if you’re going to read someone, at least write your words right.’ Don’t misspell your words, mom. You can’t do that. Take your time and spell check your stuff!’ …I don’t have time for that.
This advice was likely given because of the numerous times Knowles came to his family’s defense in the past. He defended Beyoncé on social media when people claimed the pop star was trying to lighten her skin on the red carpet. She also recently called out people on Instagram who had something negative to say about her daughter’s Christmas Day halftime performance that aired on Netflix. Clearly, Knowles is fiercely supportive and doesn’t take it lightly when people persecute the people she loves.
Although Knowles is there to fight fiercely for her family, the media scrutiny and social media commentary may not stop anytime soon. Jay-Z has recently been criticized due to alleged involvement with P Diddy and illegal activities that occurred during parties at his residence. Jay-Z has denied any wrongdoing, however, this has not stopped social media from reacting strongly to the allegations. Furthermore, his involvement with other controversial artists such as Kanye West continues to receive criticism, and his marriage to Beyoncé and accusations of infidelity They continue to plague his public image.
However, Jay-Z and Beyoncé continue to support each other and the family they have built together. It seems that Bey’s mother is also loyal to her son-in-law and probably wants to publicly defend him even more than she already has. The instinct to protect your family is understandable, but sometimes joining in on the chatter on social media causes more harm than good. Maybe it’s best for Tina Knowles to follow Jay-Z’s advice on the matter, especially considering the current circumstances.
