Finnish police say seven sailors from the Eagle S oil tanker suspected of cutting an undersea electrical cable between Finland and Estonia last week are the subject of a sabotage investigation and have been banned from leaving the country.

“Seven members of staff whose status in the criminal investigation is that of suspects have been placed under a travel ban,” Finnish police said in a statement.

On Christmas Day, the Estlink 2 submarine cable carrying electricity from Finland to Estonia was suddenly disconnected from the grid, just over a month after two telecommunications cables were cut in Swedish territorial waters in the Baltic.

Finnish authorities have been investigating the Eagle S oil tanker that left a Russian port for alleged “sabotage” after it was found nearby without its anchor.

The Island-flagged ship Prepare dinner is detained in Finnish waters in the Baltic Sea pending investigation.
